My son is in the army, 23 years old, 6ft 3 inches tall and thin. He had a tension Pneumothorax 1 1/2 years ago while in army training. He was hospitalized for 3 days and a tube was inserted. He seems OK now, but I read that the chances it will recur is 50%. I am concerned that he will get orders to go to Iraq and he could have another occurance at a bad time. Does anyone know if this condition is grounds to ask for a medical exemption from a combat area?

I just asked the question about my son and exemption from a military combat area in Iraq. After looking at the definitions again, he might not have been a tension pneumothorax, maybe just a spontaneous.

Either way at 6ft 3" and very thin he seems at high risk for another. Is this a basis for some kind of medical exemption from being in a combat area?

I am 25yrs old. 6'2 167lbs. Prime suspect for (SP) according to the doctors. It has been 21/2 wks since my first (SP) in my left lung. Was leaving from work at hospital feeling good and suddenly had a sharp pain in my upper left back. I thought it was bad muscle spasm. Went 2 miles down the road to post office, by that time pain had gotten worse in back and now I was getting short of breath. Went back to the hospital to ER which by that time I could bearly walk or talk because of the pain. After X-rays were taken of chest, it was said 40% of left lung collapsed. Doctor inserted a small new chest tube called the Hiemlick into the lung. Felt a little bit better and Doctor said to go home and take it easy. 3 minutes after he left my blood pressure was 40/19 and my lung collapsed some more. Ended up staying the night at hospital. I am now trying to recover from the (SP). I'ts been difficult back at work, my back feels tight and has lots of spasms. As long as I sit down and rest pressure goes away. It is very scary, one moment you think you are healty and unstoppable in life, but with in a flash a (SP) can change everything. I hope and pray for the sake of taking care of my wonderful family my lung will heal up. But reading so many peoples experiences with (SP) reaccuring it makes worry. Please respond!

Hallo,

Groetjes Nicolette

I have experienced many pneumos over the past ten years and was actually bed bound untill learning a breath re-training method called 'The Buteyko Method'.
This has changed my life.
No drugs, no surgery, no more chest tubes. This method has been actively ignored by the medical establishment for many reasons!
Unfortunately many doctors don't listen to their patients as they know it all themselves and the thought of a drug free cure to so many related breathing disorders/diseases poses a real threat to the multi million dollar business of pharmaceutical companies.
i write this motivated only by the need to share the good news that no longer must so many people suffer the excruciating pain of chest tubes etc.
I would appeal to whoever may read this to look into it and not just dismiss it out of hand. Buteyko is associated with Asthma and hyperventilation, Buteyko advocates have not researched the potential benefits to pneumo-sufferers. I have found this breathing program to have been invaluable to my new found health and well being and I don't see how it couldn't but help other sufferers out there!!
I have had at least four tubes, a blebectomy, a thorachotomy etc and they have only exacerbated the problem. I know what I'm talking about from being at the sharp point of too many clumsy interventions!!
I can only hope that whoever reads this may listen to a voice of experience of a confirmed veteran. I'm 5 '10 ,120 lbs, and 31yrs old. My first pneumo occurred ten years ago!! Best wishes to You all!!

My son 16 has had 3 Sp's sinse the surgery.
Now we just had the Pluradeses
